All eyes on the latest hi-tech gizmos
TABLET computers, 3D televisions, cool new phones, -future versions of Windows and many other high-tech -gadgets are catching the eyes of tens of thousands of visitors at the on-going -International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in the United States.
Among the exhibits, tablet computers and 3D television are definitely the splash at the show this year.
A research group says the global market for tablet computers such as the iPad will almost triple by the end of 2014.
Yankee Group says it expects tablet sales to rise to US$46 billion in 2014 from US$16 billion in 2010. The researchers said tablet sales are rising faster than high-definition TV sets, handheld gaming consoles and even MP3 players.
The first gadgets with built-in access to Verizon Wireless' new, high-speed wireless data network are a smart phone and a tablet from Motorola Mobility Inc, both designed to take advantage of the network's speed for video conferencing.
More devices for Verizon's 4G network, which went live for laptop modems last month, were announced at the CES by the CEO of Verizon Communications Inc on Thursday.
The new wireless network is the fastest in the US, and Verizon is hoping to cash in on that advantage by selling tablets and smart phones that devour data.
Motorola's Xoom tablet will come with a 26-centimeter screen and two cameras, one for video chatting and one for high-definition videos. Initially it will work with Verizon's 3G network and will be upgradeable so it can work on the speedier 4G network in the second quarter of the year.
The Droid Bionic smart phone will also have two cameras, to help with video conferencing. It will be one of the first phones with a so-called "dual-core processor" that will roughly double its computing capacity, which should help with video processing. The phone's market debut hasn't been set.
Considered to be the must-attend event for avid tech -enthusiasts, this year's CES has attracted 2,500 companies from around the world.
The four-day show will end tomorrow.
