Andy Warhol's canvas of Chairman Mao sells for 锟7.6 million

An Andy Warhol canvas of Chairman Mao Zedong has sold for an astonishing 锟7.6 million (US$12.7 million), the Mirror reported.

Warhol's Mao series was a response to US president Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972.

He transformed the official portrait of the leader, in this case using the red and yellow color scheme of the China’s Cultural Revolution, the Mirror reported.

It was last sold at auction in June 2000 for 锟421,500 - meaning it was sold on Wednesday night for more than 18 times the price paid then.
