Australian PM visits quake-hit town in Japan

VISITING Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard today traveled to a town in northeastern Japan which was hit by the twin disasters in March, becoming the first foreign leader to visit the quake-hit zone.

Gillard paid a visit to Minami-Sanriku in Miyagi prefecture today, where an Australian relief team operated last month.

Gillard held a talk with Prime Minister Naoto Kan after arriving in Japan on Wednesday. Gillard underscored the importance of the Australia-Japan alliance at a press conference in Tokyo yesterday.

On March 31, French President Nicolas Sarkozy became the first foreign leader to visit Japan since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
