Australian charged with raping daughter for 30 years
AN Australian man has been charged with sexually abusing his daughter for 30 years and fathering her four children, local media said today.
The unnamed man in the southern state of Victoria started abusing his daughter when she was aged 11, said the Herald-Sun newspaper.
The newspaper said the girl had four children from her father, all of whom were born with birth defects, and one later died.
Victorian police would not immediately comment on the case when contacted by Reuters, citing a court suppression order on the identity of the family.
Victoria state Community Services Minister Lisa Neville said the allegations against the man, now aged in his 60s, were shocking.
"This is a case that's gone on for 30 years. Obviously this will be a priority to look into," Neville told Australian radio.
The Herald-Sun said the man was charged in February after his alleged victim approached police, three years after she first alerted authorities but asked them not to act because she feared for her safety.
The man has denied sexually assaulting his daughter, but was charged by police after DNA tests proved he fathered the children, said the newspaper.
The woman and her three surviving children were being held in a safe house with authorities, state radio said. The man will face court in November on around 80 charges, including rape and threatening to kill.
