Australia's Qantas jet forced to return after birds strike
A Qantas Airways plane was forced to return to Johannesburg yestserday evening after birds flew into one of its engines, the Australian airline said today.
A Qantas spokesman said flight QF64 from Johannesburg to Sydney experienced a bird strike on one of the four engines of the Boeing 747 and suffered minor engine damage. The incident happened a few minutes after take-off.
"The flight crew followed procedure for the scenario and returned to Johannesburg," a spokesman told Australian Associated Press.
Bird strikes were not common and Qantas experienced two to four a year at the most, the spokesman said.
Qantas has had several problems with its planes' engines over the last two weeks, notably the explosion of an engine on an A380 over Indonesia on November 4.
