Bahraini protestors clash with police, 2 killed
AT least two people were dead and dozens of others injured today after a predawn police operation to disperse protestors camped at a roundabout in the Bahraini capital.
The Interior Ministry said in a statement that police were forced to take action after all previous negotiations with the protestors failed. But during the operation, some protestors "left quietly," it said.
TV footage showed the Pearl Roundabout has been left largely empty after the clashes between police and demonstrators, who had been occupying and camping at the local landmark during past two days.
Protestors were gone, but police helicopters were still hovering above the area.
Al Jazeera quoted protestors as saying that they were in sleep while being attacked by police without pre-warning. Hospital sources said dozens of people were sent to emergency rooms for treatment of wounds.
The tiny Gulf nation was rocked by a wave of protests since Monday, following recent unrest in Tunisia and Egypt. Prior to the latest deaths, at least two protestors had already been killed earlier this week.
The protestors continued to press for political reforms and make other demands, even after the king made a televised apology over the death during the protests.
