Barricades being removed from Cairo's Tahrir Square

BARRICADES, roadblocks and metal barriers were being removed today from the periphery of Cairo's Tahrir Square, the focal point of Egypt's 18-day-long mass protests that led to the resignation of ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

Egyptian troops, with the help of the civilians, started dismantling all barriers, wreckages and debris that block the outside access to the square, bringing back a sense of normalcy that had been lacking during the turbulent past two weeks, according to local media reports.

After Vice President Omar Suleiman announced late yesterday that Mubarak has ended his presidency and handed power to the army after nearly 30 years in office, the military said it was preparing the next steps and would announce them soon, a step acclaimed by the cheering crowds at the Tahrir Square, as well as places all across the country.

Mubarak's departure was celebrated nearly everywhere in the most populous country of the Arab world. People danced and sang, fireworks went off and cars honked. But behind the celebrations, there was a note of caution over how the transition would unfold and what direction it would take.
