Beached penguin to head home
A YOUNG Emperor penguin that captured global attention when it was washed up on a New Zealand beach after straying thousands of kilometers from home is to head back to Antarctica aboard a research vessel in a specially designed cage.
Wellington Zoo, where the bird - nicknamed Happy Feet after the Warner Brothers animated movie of that name - has been living since June, said yesterday the penguin will be put on the research vessel Tangaroa when it leaves on a fisheries survey later this month. The bird will be released at sea.
Rob Murdoch, of New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, said: "The team are looking forward to having this extra special guest aboard the vessel with us.
"Happy Feet has captured the hearts of New Zealanders and people across the world, and we are pleased to be able to help safely return him to the Southern Ocean."
A Wellington Zoo vet will accompany the penguin, which will be housed in a crate designed by zoo staff to keep it cool and comfortable during the voyage.
Just like the penguin in the movie, it will be fitted with a GPS tracker to allow fans to monitor its progress on several websites, includingwww.sirtrack.com and www.ourfarsouth.org.
Happy Feet is the only the second Emperor penguin to have shown up in New Zealand. The last made its appearance in 1967.
