Boat sinks in southern Vietnam, 9 missing

A boat carrying 30 passengers, including two American experts, sunk last night on the Soai Rap River in Vietnam's southern Ho Chi Minh City, leaving nine people missing, local online VNExpress reported today.

The report quoted chairman of Can Gio District People's Committee, Huynh Cach Mang as saying the accident happened about 9 pm local time last night, when the boat was on its way from Go Cong Dong of southern Tien Giang province to Vung Tau City. On board are two American experts and workers of the Vietnam petroleum steel-tube manufacturing share-holding company.

Due to strong wind, the boat capsized on the portion of Soai Rap River that crosses Long Hoa village in Can Gio district of Ho Chi Minh City.

Shortly after the incident was reported, the Vietnam Maritime Rescue Center (MRC) started rescue operations by sending a ship to find the victims. As of 1:45 am local time today, 17 passengers were rescued, and three hours later four more were found safe. The sunken boat was also found and kept for later investigation.

Rescue forces are trying to find the remaining 9 missing passengers.

Doctors from the Can Gio District Hospital said the 14 rescued passengers are receiving treatment in the First Aids Faculty.
