Bodies of murder taken to Mexican City for identification

THE bodies of murdered bus passengers recently pulled from mass graves in northeastern Mexico began arriving in Mexico City yesterday, as the authorities attempt to identify the victims of a crime that has claimed 145 lives.
Authorities in the State of Tamaulipas, where the slaughter occurred, now said that those 145 bodies have been found in the municipality of San Fernando, just south of the Texas border, since April 6.
Seventeen suspects have been arrested for a crime blamed on Los Zetas, a cartel founded by former elite soldiers that has been fighting for control of the lucrative drug trafficking routes through eastern Mexico and into the United States.
Federal Attorney General Marisela Morales announced Wednesday that 16 municipal police officers in San Fernando were arrested for allegedly providing protection to Los Zetas.
Los Zetas used illegal checkpoints on Tamaulipas highways to stop busses and abduct passengers, federal officials have said.
It's believed Los Zetas attempted to forcibly recruit the passengers into its ranks. Clandestine graves have been discovered in at least three states over the past 10 days. The most recent graves were found in the northwestern state of Durango containing 13 bodies, three of which were decapitated.
