Body found in waters off west coast of S. Korea

SOUTH Korea's Coast Guard earlier today found a body in waters near Daecheong Island off west coast of South Korea, where a fishing boat went missing late yesterday, Seoul's Yonhap News Agency reported.

The identity of the body has been determined to be one of the nine crew members onboard the fishing boat, it added.

The 100-ton fishing boat "Kumyang 98" lost contact last night while returning from a search operation for 46 missing sailors of the Navy ship "Cheonan" that sank last Friday night near the South Korean island of Baekryeongdo off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula due to an unexplained explosion, reports said.

The Coast Guard said yesterday that the fishing boat might have sunken as the rescue group only spotted floating oil in the area.

Rescue operations are still underway, but the other eight sailors remain missing, reports said.

A passing-by Cambodian-registered cargo ship has been detained in relation to the sinking, Yonhap said.
