Bomb attack targets Afghan capital police chief's office, killing one
AT least one person was killed and eight others were wounded after a bomb went off in Afghan capital police chief's office on Sunday morning, sources said.
"The Kabul Police Chief General Mohammad Zahir Zahir is safe and sound. But the blast had martyred his office manager Col. Mohammad Yasin on the spot and injured eight others," a police source told Xinhua anonymously.
He said the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals, adding the blast took place in the third floor of the Kabul Police Headquarters in central Kabul at around 9:00am local time.
The explosion damaged several offices but did not cause fire, he added.
The Taliban insurgent group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The nature of the blast remained unknown. But, a Taliban purported spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, told local media that a Taliban suicide bomber carried out the attack, killing and injuring several members of the security forces.
The Taliban has intensified attacks over the past few months as the NATO and U.S. forces are withdrawing from the country. The war-torn country is due to take over the responsibility for its own security from NATO-led troops by the end of year.
More than 34,000 NATO-led coalition troops, down from the peak of 130,000 in 2010, are stationed in Afghanistan. Nearly 24,000 of them are Americans and the United States plans to trim its forces to less than 10,000 next year.
This was the second blast in Kabul in a single day. Earlier on Sunday morning, an improvised bomb was detonated near an Afghan army bus in southeastern Kabul, leaving no casualties.
