Bombing kills 10 in Iraq market
A CAR bomb exploded in a market in the mainly Shi'ite Iraqi town of Khalis yesterday killing 10 people and wounding 25, according to police.
The country's special forces cordoned off the town 80 kilometers north of the capital, Baghdad, where the Iraqi government had hosted US Vice President Joe Biden in a ceremony to mark the end of the US military presence in Iraq.
The remaining 13,000 US troops are due to leave Iraq in the next few weeks, nearly nine years after the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.
The bomb, which left a three-meter-wide crater and at least 10 charred vehicles, was in a pickup truck.
Witness Ibrahim al-Temimi said: "The vehicle was parked among the other cars and was driven by a young man. Just 10 minutes later it blew up."
In another attack yesterday, gunmen stormed three houses belonging to former members of a government-supported Sunni militia group, killing eight people and wounding five in Buhriz, about 30 kilometers from Khalis, according to police and hospital sources.
Militants continue to kill scores of people every month in bombings and other attacks. October's official civilian death toll was 161, the highest this year.
US and Iraqi officials have said attacks may rise as US troops withdraw under terms of a 2008 security pact.
