British labor union leader Jack Jones dies aged 96

BRITISH labor union leader Jack Jones has died at the age of 96.

Jones is considered one of Britain's most influential labor leaders after heading the Transport and General Workers' Union between 1969 and 1978 and leading battles to secure better rights for workers.

Jones joined international brigades in the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s and later served as a Labour Party city council lawmaker in the northern English city of Liverpool.

After retirement Jones turned down a seat in the House of Lords and instead focussed on campaigning for older people.

His son Mick Jones said Wednesday that his father had died yesterday of natural causes in the Peckham area of London.
