Canada pulls top soldier in Haiti on allegations

CANADA'S top military officer in Haiti has been relieved of duty and is under investigation for unspecified allegations, a Canadian government official confirmed yesterday.

The decision to remove Col. Bernard Ouellette, who was also the chief of staff to the United Nations mission, was made by Lieutenant-General Marc Lessard, a spokesman for Defense Minister Peter MacKay said.

"This is a chain of command decision that was taken because of a loss of confidence in the military leader in Haiti. The allegations are under investigation," said the spokesman, Jay Paxton.

He would not disclose details of the allegations or comment on a Canadian Press report that they involved an inappropriate relationship.

The news comes after the commander of Canada's troops in Afghanistan was stripped of his duties in May because of allegations of an inappropriate personal relationship.

Canada's military is in Haiti as part of broader aid effort that followed Haiti's devastating Jan. 12 earthquake. Canada is a major aid donor to Haiti.
