Car blast kills at least 12 in Pakistan's spy agency
AT least 12 persons were killed and over 60 others injured in a deadly suicide attack near a spy agency's building in northwest Pakistan's Peshawar this morning, district police said.
A bomber exploded his explosive-packed car near the office of spy agency ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) in Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP).
Police and spokesman of Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) Sahib Gul said that three more victims of the blast expired in hospitals, thus raising the death toll to 12 and over 60 injured. Mostly soldiers and employees of ISI were among those killed and injured.
The condition of several victims was stated to be critical while seven injured in precarious condition were shifted to ICU, Sahib Gul added.
The information minister of NWFP Mian Muhammad Iftikhar said that three intelligence officials are missing after the attack and40 to 50 vehicles were destroyed in the blast.
The bomber succeeded to take his car to a check post near the ISI office in the highly-guarded area on Artillery Road. A witness said that soldiers at the check post signaled the car to stop but the bomber exploded the vehicle near the 3-storey building. He said the guards also fired at the car shortly before he detonated his bomb.
As a result of the blast, front structure of the spy agency's building was severely damaged. The blast was so powerful that dead bodies of the victims with stains of blood scattered in the area with black smoke fume over the sky. Windowpanes of nearby buildings at the vicinity were smashed into pieces.
According to the bomb disposal squad, about 300 kg of explosives were used in the attack.
District Coordination Officer (DCO) of Peshawar Sahibzada Anees said that rescue operation continued and debris of the building are being removed.
Mian Muhammad Iftikhar said that there was no lack of security in the sensitive area but it is hard to avert such attack.
All schools and educational institutions in the area were closed, according to the authorities.
The security forces cordoned off the area and also pushed the TV cameramen and photographers away from the site. Private ambulance service was also not allowed by the soldiers to shift the injured to the hospital, an official said.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. But such attacks are blamed on Taliban-linked militants.
Analysts say that the militants have stepped up attacks after the security forces intensified operation against the militants in South Waziristan tribal region.
The day to day suicide attacks have disrupted life in the country and the people are also raising questions about the ability of the Pakistani police and other law enforcement agencies to check the terrorist attacks.
