Colombia rescues 3rd hostage in 1998 FARC kidnapping

COLOMBIAN armed forces rescued yesterday the third hostage kidnapped 12 year ago by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the large rebel group in Colombia.

Dagoberto Suarez, governor of the central-south province of Guaviare, confirmed the rescue of army sergeant Arvey Delgado.

"The troops are hoping for better weather so that he could be sent to Bogota," he said.

The rescue followed two earlier rescues of General Luis Mendietais, the highest-ranking military officer kidnapped by the FARC, and Colonel Enrique Murillo in the jungles of Guaviare.

All of the three rescuees were kidnapped on Nov.1, 1998, by the FARC in the Mitu city, capital of southeastern Vaupes province, when the FARC was launching an attack to take the city.
