Court detains embassy attacker

A COURT in Tel Aviv has approved the detention of a Palestinian who broke into the Turkish Embassy in Israel armed with a knife and a gasoline can, tried to take hostages and demanded political asylum.

Turkish officials at the embassy allowed Israeli police and medics to remove the attacker, Nadim Injaz, after a seven-hour standoff on Tuesday.

The Israeli Courts Administration said yesterday the Tel Aviv court approved holding Injaz in jail for a week to allow police to investigate.

Under Israeli practice, a suspect can be held in jail while police look into his case, and charges are filed afterward if warranted.

Police said Injaz, a Palestinian from the West Bank, carried out a similar attack on the British Embassy in 2006, also demanding asylum.

He had recently been released from prison after serving time for that attack.

A lawyer who said he spoke to Injaz by phone told Israel Radio Injaz said he admired Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"I love him and I respect him," he said. The Turkish leader "should give me political asylum against these murderers the Zionists, the murdering Jews," he added.
