Culling of macaques condemned
ANIMAL activists yesterday criticized the Malaysian government for the culling of nearly 100,000 macaques a year, warning it threatens their survival.
The country's wildlife department defended the move as an internationally accepted method to control a growing population of pest species. Last year, 97,119 monkeys were killed mostly in urban and agricultural areas, where they destroyed crops and attacked people, said wildlife official Salman Saaban.
This was up from nearly 88,000 macaques killed in 2011, mostly by gun shot as they are difficult to trap, he said.
British animal protection group BUAV said Malaysia was applauded in 2008 for reinstating a ban on the export of macaques for research purposes but it was appalled now with the mass killing.
