Cyclist dies in Houston race

A cyclist died yesterday while riding in the Tour de Houston, the first death in the eight-year history of the annual event, organizers said.

Jay Evans, Houston Fire Department spokesman, described the death as a cardiac incident, not an accident, according to the website of The Houston Chronicle.

Susan Christian, director of the Mayor's Office of Special Events and producer of the ride, also said the death was not a result of any collision during the event, which included three races.

"Despite a phenomenal Tour de Houston with great ridership and extraordinary weather, we are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our riders," said Christian.

Four riders received emergency medical transport, a lower total than normal for the ride, according to Christian.
