DPRK calls for 'fruitful ties' with Japan's incoming gov't: report

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) today called for "fruitful relations" with Yukio Hatoyama' s incoming administration, Kyodo News reported, citing Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly.

In an interview with Kyodo News in Pyongyang, Kim said Pyongyang-Tokyo ties will solely depend on how it tackles issues such as compensation for Japan's 1910-1945 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

Kim also indicated Pyongyang will closely watch Democratic Party of Japan leader Hatoyama' s policy stance on the DPRK as prime minister.

The prospect of bilateral ties "will solely depend on the attitude of the Japanese government," he said.
