DPRK media blast ROK's military exercise
THE Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s official news agency blasted the joint drills held by South Korea today, calling it a "provocation."
The DPRK's official news agency KCNA said in a commentary that the large-scale drills are a "crazy exercise for war" and aimed at "launching an aggression against the north."
Although South Korea claimed that the exercises were "routine drills" and "had nothing to do with the Yonphyong incident," the "provocative and aggressive nature of the drills" cannot be covered by these remarks, KCNA said.
Tensions are mounting on the peninsula after an exchange of artillery fire between South Korea and the DPRK on Nov. 23, which killed four people.
South Korea held a live-fire artillery drill in the sensitive area of Yonphyong island off the west coast on Monday.
Also today, the DPRK's official newspaper Rodong Sinmun issued several commentaries accusing South Korea of keeping the Korean Peninsula on a state of "touch and go" by constantly holding military exercises.
According to the Rodong Sinmun, after the Yonphyong Island incident in November, South Korea held firing drills again recently, trying to ignite an aggression and bring the Korean Peninsula to a extremely dangerous state.
The commentaries warned that the US attempts to gain military advantages in Northeast Asia and ignite a new cold-war are just wishful thinking and must be thwarted.
The South Korean Defense Department announced on Wednesday that the three-day drills would be held in waters off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula from Wednesday, and large-scale joint drills between the South Korean Army and Air Force would be held from today.
