De Blasio wins New York mayoral election

New York City mayoral hopeful Bill de Blasio, a liberal Democrat who campaigned as the city's public advocate, won the race for the metropolis' mayor in a lopsided victory last night.

De Blasio, 52, beat his Republican rival Joe Lhota, a deputy mayor under Rudolph Giuliani, becoming the first Democrat to lead the City Hall since 1994. He would succeed billionaire Michael Bloomberg, who had been mayor of the largest U.S. city for 12 years.
