Death toll in Indian hospital fire shoots to 73
At least 73 people, most of them patients, were killed in the fire that broke out in the basement of a private hospital in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata this morning, according to local media.
The AMRI hospital officials said that 70 patients and three staffers had been killed in the fire, according to Indo-Asian News Service.
Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had confirmed 61 deaths in the tragedy and 41 of the bodies had been taken to the state-run SSKM Hospital in South Kolkata, while 20 other bodies were still in an upper floor of the hospital.
Of the bodies taken to SSKM, autopsies were been completed on 36 while color photos of the faces of the unidentified victims will be displayed outside the SSKM morgue. Twelve of them have been identified so far.
Police had started a criminal case against the hospital top management, who have reportedly fled after the fire broke out. The government blamed the hospital management for negligence and said they would be arrested and be taken with strict action.
This is the second time for the hospital to catch fire in three years.
The government also promised 300,000 rupees (US$6,000) if family members of the victims, who are not well-off, made an appeal.
