Death toll in Sri Lankan train accident rises to 3
SRI Lanka police say the death toll in a train collision has risen to three. Another 27 were injured.
A passenger train rammed into an observation car at the back of another train yesterday evening near a railway station in Alawwa, about 35 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of capital, Colombo.
Television footage today showed that the observation car was severely damaged.
Police spokesman Maxi Proctor said a French national was among the dead but did not give his name.
The driver of the train and his assistant were also killed. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Proctor said 18 people are still hospitalized.
Trains are an important form of travel in Sri Lanka because they are inexpensive and many roads are in poor condition.
