Death toll of Indonesia's dam burst rises to 93
THE death toll of Indonesia's dam burst rose to 93, local press reported today.
Quoting Coordinator of the police post at STLE Ahmad Dahlan, Comr. Dahlan, the report said a joint search and rescue team has recovered 33 more bodies of dam burst as of yesterday evening, in Cireundeu, Tangerang, near Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, bringing the death toll to 93.
Dahlan, however, said that the team found it difficult to identify the bodies recovered from the thick mud and building rubble.
"Many victims are not registered by our neighborhood unit because they were university students who rented rooms in the neighborhood," Bejo, an official of the severely-damaged neighborhood unit said.
Meanwhile, an official of the National Disaster Emergency Center Rahmat Salam said out of the victims, 62 are female and 31 are male. And 102 others are still missing.
The dam burst, triggered by torrential rains on Friday evening, had flatted 319 homes, schools and a university campus. More than 500 residents became homeless and were staying at temporary shelters erected at several locations around the disaster area.
More than 1,000 search and rescue team members would keep searching for victims every day from 8am to 5pm for a week, the police said.
