Death toll of Mexican daycare center blaze rises to 38
THE death toll in a Mexican daycare center blaze has risen to 38, officials said yesterday.
The death toll rise came after several children died overnight, and the figure is expected to go even up as over 40 children and six adults were still hospitalized, said local officials.
Most of the victims died from smoke inhalation, local media quoted officials as saying, noting the injured adults included staff members at the daycare center and people who tried to help.
Some of the injured children had third-degree burns, said fire department officials.
There were some 142 children and six staff members in the privately-run center when the fire occurred.
A fire at a nearby warehouse leased by the state government spread to the center and caused the tragedy, and firefighters spent two hours to control the blaze, local media said.
The cause of the accident was still under investigation.
