Deputy, suspect dead in Ohio trailer park standoff

A SHERIFF'S deputy investigating a report of gunfire at a western Ohio trailer park has been shot and killed. The shooting suspect also is dead after a standoff.

Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly says 40-year-old Deputy Suzanne Hopper was the mother of two children and was known for her dedication to the job and to keeping herself safe. He says she was wearing a protective vest yesterday but it didn't shield her from the gunfire that killed her at the Enon Beach trailer park, 50 miles west of Columbus.

Kelly says a police officer was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the shooting suspect. He says the suspect apparently was killed by police gunfire.

Trailer park resident Angelina Inman says she saw the deputy lying on the ground. She says another officer was crying while he tried to reach her body.
