Dine with WikiLeaks' Assange for only US$575
EIGHT admirers of anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange, are being offered the opportunity to dine privately with their idol early next month at an asking price of 350 pounds (US$575) per head.
An announcement posted on the auction website E-Bay said the three-hour fund-raising lunch was set for July 2 and Assange would be accompanied by Slavoj Zizek, a Slovenian academic quoted by Wikipedia as calling himself a "radical leftist."
The E-Bay announcement described Zizek as a "renowned Slovenian philosopher".
It said revenue from the lunch will be used "to benefit WikiLeaks" but gave no detail. The venue for the meal was described only as "one of London's finest restaurants".
Assange has infuriated the United States by publishing thousands of secret US diplomatic cables and is now fighting extradition from Britain to Sweden over alleged sex crimes.
After the lunch on July 2, Assange is scheduled hold a public discussion with Zizek about "the impact of WikiLeaks on the world and what it means for the future."
A link to the E-Bay solicitation was posted yesterday on WikiLeaks' Twitter feed, one of Assange's principal means of communicating with the public since his release on bail earlier this year by British authorities.
He is appealing against a request from Sweden for his extradition for questioning about sexual misconduct allegations.
