Draft climate text pledges 2 degree cap
GLOBAL temperature rises must be kept to a 2 degrees Celsius cap and billions of dollars of climate funds must be given to poor countries, sources reported an early draft declaration at the Copenhagen talks as saying.
Two sources at the talks, who asked not to be identified, said today the draft pledged rich countries to donate $100 billion dollars annually by 2020 to poor nations to help them adapt their economies and cope with climate change.
The draft said global temperatures needed to be kept from rising beyond 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, said the sources.
The draft, presented by the U.N. talks' Danish hosts, has been presented to climate advisers of 26 influential countries, and will be considered by their leaders later today.
The text, which could still change, does not currently mention carbon emissions reduction targets for industrialized nations, one source said.
