Earthquake costs New Zealand government US$836 m
THE two major earthquakes in Christchurch have cost New Zealand government 1.1 billion NZ dollars (US$836 million), Prime Minister John Key said today.
John Key released interim figures on the bills incurred so far via emergency welfare payments and Earthquake Commission (EQC) claims.
He said 800 million NZ dollars has been spent for residential claims to EQC and another 175 million NZ dollars on wage subsidies and job loss assistance in the wake of September 2010 and February 2011 quakes.
He said there is a lot more spending to come.
