Egyptian security evacuates Nahda Square protesters: state TV
The Egyptian security forces managed to evacuate Nahda Square in Giza, one of the two major squares where supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi had been sitting in for over 45 days, state TV reported today.
The police forces have totally ended the protests in Nahda, and the camps there are "totally under control of the security now," a security official was quoted as saying by state-run MENA news agency.
TV footage showed members of the security forces clearing up the tents at the square.
Some of pro-Morsi protesters confronted the security forces who responded with tear gas, and the police is highly sticking to self- restraint, according to MENA.
Meanwhile, a Xinhua correspondent said three people were burnt to death after a gas cylinder exploded in their tents due to the turmoil at Nahda Square.
Also, the security forces on Wednesday morning have started breaking up the sit-in outside Rabia al-Adawiya Square in Cairo's Nasr City, another base of pro-Morsi protesters.
"There is heavy gunfire all over the place and there are policemen in black seem to be from the Special Forces, while at least 15 people were killed in the process," Xinhua's correspondent at Rabia al-Adawiya Square said.
The security forces used loudspeakers to warn the residents around the sit-in not to leave their buildings or look out of the window during the operation.
The Interior Ministry said in a statement that the security forces "have taken all necessary procedures to disband the two said sit-ins, allowing the sit-inners to safely leave through specific announced exits."
Morsi's loyalists have been holding two major sit-ins at the two squares since June 28, days before Morsi's ouster, demanding his reinstatement.
