Egypt's Mubarak sentenced to 3 years in jail for embezzlement

AN Egyptian court today sentenced former president Hosni Mubarak to three years in jail for embezzlement of public funds designated for presidential palace maintenance, state-run Nile TV reported.

The Cairo Criminal Court, presided by Judge Ousama Shaheen, also sentenced Mubarak's sons Alaa and Gamal to four-year jail terms in the same case.

The Mubaraks were fined 125 million Egyptian pounds (nearly US$17. 5 million), and were ordered to reimburse 21 million Egyptian pounds to the state treasury.

Mubarak and his sons, along with other four of his aides, were charged with misappropriating 100 million pounds of funds intended to refurbish the presidential palace.

The four aides were acquitted for lack of evidence.
