Eight killed in mass murder case in western Canada

A depressed man killed eight people, including two children, in two separate break-in attacks before killing himself in a restaurant in Canada's western province of Alberta, local media said on Tuesday.
"It is a tragic day for Edmonton and our thoughts go out to the community as we all come to terms with the senseless mass murder of eight people," Edmonton police chief Rod Knecht said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
The first victim was a middle-aged woman, who was shot dead by the intruder and her body was found by police officers after they acted in response of a phone call reporting gunshots in South Edmonton.
In another incident at a home in north Edmonton, seven people, including three women, two men and two children, were found dead Tuesday morning.
The suspected murderer was later found dead in a restaurant in Fort Saskatchewan in the northeast suburb of Edmonton, apparently by suicide. His family said he seemed depressed and overly emotional.
Knecht stressed that the public was not at any risk.
"This series of events are not believed to be random," Canadian Broadcasting Corporate News quoted Knecht as saying. "And these events do not appear to be gang-related but rather tragic incidents of domestic violence."
Police have not released any names or the relationships between the victims and the man who committed suicide. Knecht said this was the biggest mass murder in Edmonton since six people were slain in 1956.
