Elton John seeking meeting with Putin

British pop star Elton John said he would like to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the country鈥檚 attitude to gay rights.

鈥淚鈥檇 say, come on. Gay people are not the problem here,鈥 the 68-year-old told BBC television in an interview released Saturday.

In 2013, Putin signed off on a law banning the promotion or display of homosexuality in front of minors.

Russia has banned same-sex marriage, and opposes support for equal rights for homosexuals, often calling such efforts 鈥減ropaganda.鈥

John, who has two adopted children with his husband David Furnish, said he hoped to promote tolerance.

John is one of the biggest-selling artists of all time and first performed in the former Soviet Union in 1979.

鈥淚 like the Russians. When I went there in 1979 I was astonished at how friendly and kind and lovely they were,鈥 he said.

Asked if he thought he could influence Putin, John replied: 鈥淧robably not. I don鈥檛 know. I鈥檒l have a go. I鈥檇 love to meet him. I鈥檇 love to sit down with him and talk to him.

鈥淎t least if I meet him and say, listen, come on, let鈥檚 have a cup of tea, let鈥檚 talk about this.

鈥淗e may laugh behind my back when he shuts the door, and call me an absolute idiot, but at least I can have a conscience and say I鈥檝e tried.

鈥淚鈥檇 say, come on. Gay people are not the problem here. We are not the problem of the world. The world faces much bigger problems than gay people.鈥

John is in Ukraine, where he met President Petro Poroshenko.
