Emergency UN session
THE UN Security Council met in emergency session yesterday to discuss possible new sanctions against North Korea for its third nuclear weapons test, an act Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned as deplorable.
Ban's spokesman said: "It is a clear and grave violation of the relevant Security Council resolutions. It is deplorable that Pyongyang defied the strong and unequivocal call from the international community to refrain from any further provocative measures."
Diplomats hoped for a swift condemnation of the test but negotiations on new sanctions could take weeks.
