Europe to deliver food shipments to N. Korea

The European Union said yesterday that it will deliver food aid to North Korea, which agreed to an unprecedented monitoring system as it suffers through its worst food crisis in years.

The EU will send 10 million euros (US$14.5 million) in food aid to North Korea, after food production hit a new low and has created a growing hunger crisis in some provinces. An unusually cold winter and other severe weather have diminished recent harvests.

"The purpose of this aid package is to save the lives of at least 650,000 people who could otherwise die," said Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.

The aid will flow through North Korea's highly centralized distribution system, but international inspectors will get access to all parts of the supply chain, the EU said.

The WFP will pay more than 400 visits a month to distribution sites, hospitals, child-care facilities and households, the EU said.

The aid will focus on malnourished children under the age of five, pregnant and breat-feeding women.
