Fatal blast in Auckland leaves 1 dead

NEW Zealand police confirmed one person died and six other people were injured after an explosion in Auckland southern suburb of Onehunga this morning.

The blast happened at about 8am local time (8pm GMT yesterday) at an underground water mains worksite, the Stuff news website reported. Police said the six injured people had been transported to the Auckland Hospital with a variety of injuries.

Earlier reports said several people had died, but police later said that only one person was confirmed dead.

Emergency services remain at the scene which police said had been made as safe as possible, while work continues to determine the cause of the explosion.

The workers caught up in the blast were from HEB Construction and were working on a water main connection on behalf of Watercare Services - an Auckland Council controlled organization.

The blast threw debris and dust around the construction site.

Watercare Services confirmed the explosion was in a trench where contractors were connecting a new water main to an existing water main.
