Ferry fire kills at least 13 in Indonesia

A ferry fire in Indonesia's Sunda straits killed at least 13 people and injured more than 100 passengers early today. Rescue operation is still going on for any possible missing person, officials said.

KM Laut Teduh ferry caught fire about 40 minutes after it departed Merak port, in Banten province of Java island, at 3:19 am (2019 GMT yesterday), spokesman of Transport Ministry, Bambang Ervan, told Xinhua by phone.

The ship, bound for Beakauhuni seaport in Lampung province, was believed to carry 438 people on board, he said.

Officials at two nearby hospitals of Krakatau Medika and General Hospital at Cilegon in Banten province said that most of the injured suffer serious injuries.

According to local media reports, the fire started from a car and then spread to other cars. Many passengers jumped into water in panic.

Traveling by ship is a cheap and popular in the archipelago country. But the authorities have recently found that some of the ships do not comply with safety standards.
