Fire kills nine in Russian nursing home
NINE people died in a nursing home fire today in central Russia, the Emergencies Ministry said, in what local media said was caused when one of the occupants set himself alight.
The fire, in a small town in the Tver region some 170 km (105 miles) northwest of Moscow, took place at 4.52 local time (0052 GMT), the ministry said in a statement.
Interfax news agency said the fire took hold after a male patient set himself on fire in an apparent suicide attempt, subsequently killing himself and eight others.
"As a result of the fire, nine people died, two were injured," the ministry said in a statement. The nursing home's near-500 people were evacuated, it added.
