Fires rage around US West
A northern California wildfire has destroyed 50 buildings after a weekend lightning strike sparked the blaze, fire officials said, and it still threatened 3,500 homes.
Officials didn't yet know how many of the destroyed buildings were homes, state fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said.
Nearly 1,900 firefighters were battling the fire in rugged, densely forested terrain outside Manton, in Northern California.
The fast-moving fire is one of many burning across the US West, where lightning has sparked dry grass, brush and timber, bringing an early start to the fire season.
Elsewhere in California, a massive wildfire in Plumas National Forest continued to expand. The blaze threatens about 900 homes.
In Washington state, the National Weather Service warned about extreme fire danger in the east as forecasts called for thunderstorms with lightning. Fire crews to the north were still hoping to fully contain a week-old wildfire that has destroyed 51 homes and damaged at least six other homes, fire information officer Mark Morrow said. The fire, about 120 kilometers east of Seattle, has caused an estimated US$8.3 million in property damage.
Lightning also sparked smaller fires in Colorado, Idaho and Utah.
