Former US President George H.W. Bush awaits discharge from hospital

FORMER U.S. President George H.W. Bush is breathing normally and awaiting doctors' approval to be discharged from a Houston hospital where he has been receiving treatment for nearly a week, his spokesman said Monday.

"President Bush's breathing has returned to normal, but he will remain at the Houston Methodist Hospital tonight pending final approval from his doctors to return home," Jim McGrath said in a brief statement updating Bush's conditions on Monday.

The 90-year-old ex-president was taken by ambulance to Houston Methodist Hospital last Tuesday after experiencing shortness of breath and has remained there under observation as a precaution.

The 41st US president is expected to be released from the hospital soon, though it's unclear when exactly his hospitalization will end. McGrath said over the weekend that doctors "have begun discussing dates for his discharge."

It was not his first time to spend the Christmas holiday at a hospital. Two years ago, Bush spent Christmas at the same hospital for a bronchitis-related cough and other health issues. He remained there for nearly two months before being discharged.

The oldest living former US president, Bush suffers from Vascular Parkinsonism, a form of Parkinson's disease which has forced him to use a motorized scooter or wheelchair since at least 2012.

In June, he celebrated his 90th birthday by taking to the air for a tandem skydiving jump near his summer home in Maine.
