Former Vice President Cheney has back surgery
FORMER Vice President Dick Cheney had surgery yesterday to treat an often-debilitating back condition caused by pressure on the nerves in the lower spine, his office said in a statement.
"Former Vice President Cheney's surgery went well" the statement said, adding that he expects to be released soon.
Earlier his office said Cheney went to The George Washington University Hospital in Washington yesterday morning for elective surgery to deal with lumbar spinal stenosis.
Lumbar spinal stenosis is caused by compression of nerves in the lower back, most often producing pain or numbness, tingling and weakness in the legs and buttocks.
Cheney, 68, served under former President George W. Bush from 2001 until January this year. He has a history of health problems, including several heart attacks.
