Former prize committee chairman calls writer 'marvelous'

FORMER Chairman of Nobel Committee for Literature Kjell Espmark has justified Mo Yan's Nobel literature award.

"Mo is a marvelous story-teller," Espmark said in Shanghai yesterday. "He is a real good epic writer with fantastic fabulation fantasy. He is not only a realist, but also a fantasist. ... His work is a mixture of fairy tale and reality."

Since the Nobel is open to literature worldwide, the accuracy of translation plays a critical role in the selection, he said. "When I read Mo Yan's work, I read it in French, English and Swedish versions."

Chinese literature has its own distinctive input into global literature and Mo as laureate of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature will boost exchanges between Eastern and Western literature, he said.

Espmark is in Shanghai for the launching of the Chinese version of his novel "The Age of Oblivion."
