Four Shanghainese were murdered in an attack in Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby, Chinese Embassy officials confirmed today.
The three men and one woman were stabbed to death in a bread shop during the knife attack in Port Moresby on Monday night
All the victims have been confirmed to be Shanghainese.
Wang Chuanhai and his wife Jiang Qin had run the bread shop for more than 10 years. They were both killed. The other two victims, Wang Jianguo and Cai Liangen, were workers hired by the couple.
The victims had multiple stab wounds on their bodies, police said. Money is said to have been stolen from the shop, the report said.
One of the victims was nearly beheaded, according to media reports.
The store owner Wang Chuanhai's younger brother, Wang Chuanjiang, escaped the attack.
He reportedly recalled that the five of them were making bread on the second floor about 9pm on Monday when they heard some noises coming from downstairs.
Two of them went down first for a check and never came back. Wang recalled when the rest of them were heading downstairs 30 minutes later, they encountered a robber.
Another two were slain by the robber and Wang dashed into a room and locked up the door from inside and escaped death. He made a call to alarm police when hiding inside.
Wang recalled only seeing a single robber but other witnesses said there were other robbers.
Cash, of about 6,000 US$ in value, was later found to be taken from the checkout encounter but no other valuables inside the store were missing.
Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister has condemned the "brutal and cowardly attack" and called on the community to stay calm.
The premises of the shop was secured with high fences and razor wire, and the attacker or attackers were thought to have jumped over the fence into the premises, BBC News reported, quoting local newspaper The National.
"There were many knife wounds to their bodies," police commander Andy Bawa said, adding that the killings were "senseless, inhumane and barbaric".
Robbery and murder crimes in the country are reported to have hiked considerably in the country recently.
