Freak wave kills two on cruise

TWO passengers were killed when an 8-meter wave smashed into a cruise ship carrying nearly 2,000 people in the Mediterranean Sea, smashing glass windshields and injuring another six.

The victims were identified as a German and an Italian man.

The Cypriot-owned Louis Majesty arrived at the Spanish port of Barcelona where ambulances waited to take the injured and dead to hospital, the Spanish news agency Europa Press said.

There, four ambulances were waiting to take the bodies and the injured to a hospital in the city, the agency said.

Spanish reports said the injured included a 62-year-old woman who broke both her legs.

All television news crews were asked to leave the port late Wednesday, and it did not appear that passengers were being allowed to leave the ship.

It was unclear exactly where the incident took place. The Greek coast guard said the accident occurred near the French Mediterranean port of Marseille but French newspaper Le Figaro said the giant wave hit off Capo de Beghur off the coast of Spain.
