Free soft drinks for drivers over Xmas

THOUSANDS of pubs across Britain are to offer drivers free soft drinks over the Christmas period to help cut down on drink-driving.

The deal, run in combination with Coca-Cola, will run in more than 8,000 venues as part of the THINK! campaign, Roads Safety Minister Mike Penning said today.

Designated drivers will be able to buy one soft drink and get another free at the participating pubs.

"Drivers should be in no doubt that if they get behind the wheel after drinking this Christmas, they risk losing their license as well as facing a fine and even a prison sentence," Penning said.

"Christmas should be a time for a celebration not a night in the cells."

Last year, 380 people were killed in accidents where the driver was over the legal alcohol limit, he said.

Chief Constable Mick Giannasi, the Association of Chief Police Officers' spokesman on roads policing, said they would be targeting areas where drink-driving was a problem and any offenders would be put before the courts.

"The chances of getting caught are greater than ever," he warned.
