French agent killed after raid, Somali group says

SOMALIA'S most dangerous militant group said yesterday that it has killed a hostage French military forces tried to rescue last weekend during a botched raid.

Al-Shabab said in a Twitter posting that the agent, Denis Allex, was killed on Wednesday evening.

French officials have said they believed Allex was killed the night of the raid and that claims by al-Shabab of an execution were propaganda.

Allex, a French intelligence agent, was taken by the militants in July 2009 and had been held ever since.

A French raid on Friday night and early Saturday failed to rescue him and resulted in the deaths of two French troops and 17 Somalis, French officials said.

Al-Shabab said in an Internet posting on Wednesday that they had decided to kill Allex in retaliation for the weekend operation.

The group has offered no proof Allex was alive any time after the raid.

Admiral Edouard Guillaud, France's military chief of staff, said that there had been no indication since the night of the raid that Allex was still alive, and that French officials believed he was already dead.
