French rail strike disrupts traffic for fourth consecutive day

WITH no sign to end the standoff between French officials and trade unions over a rail reform, traffic mainly in the capital Paris was heavily affected by a railway strike which entered its fourth day.

According to SNCF, the state-run railway company, one train out of three was scheduled to carry passengers in the Ile-de-France and a third of regional trains were operational on Saturday.

The four-day-strike made about only one high-speed TGV out of three will run.

The Eurostar service connecting Paris and Germany was running as normal, but those going to Spain and Italy were disrupted with one train out of three were operational.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls reiterated calls on trade unions to stop the strike, noting that the "the government's door is open and dialogue will continue in the coming hours."

"I appeal to responsibility and dialogue and not to further penalize French people, users, employees and of course the candidates of the baccalaureate exam to start from Monday," Valls said.

"This country needs reform and change. The government is determined to implement reforms, " he added.

In an interview with the daily Le Parisien, Thierry Lepaon, secretary general of CGT called on President Francois Hollande to open "real negotiations," adding that both sides can "find a way out of crisis this weekend."

Refusing a government rail reform to unite SNCF with RFF, French railway workers were considering a possible extension of their movement to force officials to bow to their demand.
