Frenchman charged with drug smuggling
A Frenchman appeared in an Indonesian court yesterday charged with trying to smuggle 69 grams of hashish into the resort island of Bali, an offense punishable by death.
Vincent Roger Petrone, 43, was formally charged in court after being detained in January by customs officials as he arrived from Kuala Lumpur.
Officials were suspicious as he appeared "in a rush" to get through airport security.
They could not find any prohibited items in his luggage, and he was taken to hospital where he was given an X-ray, prosecutor I Gusti Putu Atmaja told the district court in the Balinese capital Denpasar.
The drug was discovered inside his digestive tract, and had been inserted via his anus.
"Four capsules filled with brown paste were removed. After narcotics testing, it was found to be hashish," said Atmaja.
At the time of his arrest, customs officers said the capsules had an estimated local street value of 42 million rupiah (US$4,300).
During the brief court appearance, a nervous-looking Petrone, wearing a long-sleeved shirt and trousers, said that he was feeling unwell but fit enough to go through the proceedings.
The next hearing was set for April 25.
His case comes after British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in January after cocaine with an estimated street value of US$2.4 million was found in her suitcase as she arrived on a flight from Bangkok.
She last week lost her first bid to get her death sentence lifted, and now faces a last-ditch appeal to Indonesia's highest court.
